Reading Logs for Children (Infant – 5th Grade)

JCPL invites children of all ages to participate in our fabulous Summer Reading program.  Children are able to turn in 1 reading log per week.  Choose the reading log designed for your child.  You have three choices for obtaining the needed reading logs: 

  1. Stop in to the library and pick one up from the Children’s Desk
  2. Print out the log from the file provided below and drop it off at the library
  3. Submit your reading log online using the online form provided. 
    Each section explains the details about how much to read, when to turn in the logs and how to win.
    The Last Day to Turn in Reading Logs is Sunday July 28, 2013.

Beginning a lifelong love of reading…

Share at least 3 hours of reading or literacy activities with your child per week and enter to win a prize! 

Literacy activities suggestions:

  • Rhyming words with familiar objects: clock-block, tummy-yummy, etc.
  • Taking time out to talk with your child about things you did together.
  • Doing a song and fingerplay, such as “Itsy Bitsy Spider.”
  • Responding to your child’s sounds and gestures and repeating them.
  • Come to a storytime at the library or visit the library to select books and play.
  • Clap each syllable in familiar words or in a nursery rhyme.
  • Share a number or shape book with your child.
  • While dressing or playing, name body parts with your child.

Once you have completed a total of 3 hours of reading and/or literacy activities, submit your reading log at the library or online!

Important – please read!  By turning in your reading log online, your submission WILL be entered into the weekly and end-of-summer grand prize drawings.  You will NOT receive the food coupon or state destination coupon.  Those are only received when turning in reading logs at the children’s desk in the library.

Nurturing a Lifelong Love of Reading…

  • Take turns telling stories during meal times.
  • Draw, write or paint with an adult.
  • Read a nonfiction (information) book.
  • Attend a library program.
  • Sing familiar songs with your child.
  • Find words that rhyme around your house.
  • Have your child make up a story using the pictures from a favorite book.
  • Play eye spy with the letters of the alphabet.

Once you have completed a total of 3 hours of reading and/or literacy activities, submit your reading log at the library or online!

Exploring the world of reading…

Your child can read independently or with someone else for at least 4 hours per week and enter to win a prize!

To complete your reading log, choose a weekly reading goal of either:

  • 4 hours of reading or 20 picture books.
  • Read or listen to books or other materials of your choice     (magazines, comic books, newspapers, audio books, etc).

 

Important – please read!  By turning in your reading log online, your submission WILL be entered into the weekly and end-of-summer grand prize drawings.  You will NOT receive the food coupon or state destination coupon.  Those are only received when turning in reading logs at the children’s desk in the library.
