The first Saturday in May unites Kentuckians across the state as we all gather to watch that famous run for the roses, The Kentucky Derby. But before the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home” or the loading of the starting gate, you’re invited to a special Derby Day Celebration at JCPL!
Join us from 12 pm to 3 pm on Saturday, May 2, for family-friendly fun with food and drinks provided by the Jessamine County Homeless Coalition.
Enjoy Derby-Themed Activities
Did you know that the state of Kentucky has produced the most Kentucky Derby winners? Or that the first horse to win the Derby was named Aristides? Our Kentucky Derby trivia challenge will put your knowledge to the test with even more fun facts!
Keep the fun rolling by decorating your own jockey silks. Jockey silks come in many patterns, with each one representing the owner of the horse the jockey is riding. Adults and children alike will be able to decorate their own silks to express themselves on race day.
Can’t wait until post time to scratch that racing itch? Challenge your friends to a hobby horse race. Guide your noble steed to victory as you race in a pack of four contenders. And don’t worry, the Kentucky Derby may be 1 ¼ mile, but we won’t have you run that far!
Then, get up close with the animal of the hour at our pony petting zoo. While they may be half the size of a racing Thoroughbred, what these ponies lack in size they make up for with an abundance of friendliness.
And of course, no Derby celebration would be complete without a fascinator contest! Wear your best hat for the chance to win. Whether you’re a long-time Derby fan, or a first-time spectator, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Come for the ponies and stay for the fun. We can’t wait to see you there!
