This classic, lyrical novel feels mythic in scope. It traces Janie Crawford’s life in three marriages as she transforms from a naive young girl to an independent, 40-year-old woman.

While Janie and her third husband are working as farm laborers in the Everglades, a devastating hurricane uproots their lives.

Pairing: Mulatto rice, as it’s called in the book, now usually called red rice.

In this YA survival thriller, seven teens are trapped at school during a heavy nor’easter.

Trapped has some funny moments and offers a real glimpse into teen friendships and relationships.

The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi

This science fiction novel takes place during a drought so severe that it causes the United States to essentially fracture.

Angel Velasquez is a “water knife”—a covert operative for the Southern Nevada Water Authority. He’s trying to track down a document detailing old, “senior” water rights.

Whoever possesses this document would gain control over the Colorado River and completely shift the balance of power in the Southwest. 

But Angel isn’t the only one hunting for it.
